Home Inspection

How to Prepare Your Home for a Successful Inspection

When selling your home, a professional inspection is a vital part of the process. Preparing properly can make a significant difference in ensuring everything goes smoothly. At CalPro Inspection Group, we recommend taking these simple steps to help the inspection go off without a hitch and present your home in its best condition.

Clean and Declutter

A clean home makes a positive impression and ensures the inspector can access all necessary areas. Tidy up each room, clear pathways, and remove clutter from areas like the basement, attic, and garage. This will allow the inspector to easily assess windows, doors, and other critical parts of your home.

Provide Access to Important Areas

Inspectors must check systems like the furnace, water heater, electrical panel, and attic. Make sure these areas are easy to reach by moving furniture or stored items. If a hatch or door leads to these spaces, ensure it’s unobstructed and accessible.

Test Lights and Appliances

Before the inspection, replace any burnt-out light bulbs and ensure all major appliances, like your oven and dishwasher, work. This will make it easier for the inspector to assess these systems and can prevent unnecessary callbacks.

Make Minor Repairs

Address any minor issues you know about, such as leaky faucets, squeaky doors, or loose handrails. Minor fixes like these can demonstrate that the home is well-maintained and can help the inspection process go smoothly.

Ensure Safety

Inspectors will check safety features like smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure these are functioning correctly. Also, check that railings, stairs, and other critical safety features are secure and free from hazards.

Remove Pets or Secure Them

If you have pets, it’s best to take them out of the house during the inspection or keep them confined to a safe, secure area. This will make the inspection process less stressful for your pets and the inspector.

Preparing your home for an inspection doesn’t have to be complicated, but a little effort can go a long way. Following these steps will help ensure a smooth inspection process and set the stage for a successful home sale.
